Is Driving School Necessary?

Body Text

Whether driving school is necessary depends on various factors, including age, previous driving experience and personal resources. Here are some considerations to help you decide if attending driving school is necessary for you:

  1. Legal Requirements: In Canada, to drive a car and or a light truck, a student must have a G1 and G2 license, for instance. The difference between the two is that for G1 licenses, the driver should be accompanied by a fully licensed driver whereas for G2 licenses, the driver may drive without an accompanying driver.
  2. Safety and Skill Development: Even if driving school is not legally required, attending one can provide valuable knowledge and skills such as accident and crash avoidance, and defensive driving skills. Professional driving instructors can teach you essential techniques navigating precarious road conditions and handling emergency situations. In addition to that, if you're a new or inexperienced driver, attending driving school can significantly improve your confidence and competence behind the wheel.
  3. Insurance Discounts: Many insurance companies offer an average of 10% discounts on auto insurance premiums for drivers who have completed a driver education course with a Ministry-approved driving school. Young drivers are considered high risk drivers resulting in them paying high insurance premiums.
  4. Traffic Violations or Court Requirements: In some cases, the court may order a driver to attend driving school because of traffic violations or have their licence revoked. In that way, driving school becomes necessary.
  5. Personal Preferences: Some individuals may prefer to learn to drive through self-study because they may have access to the resources to make this possible, such as family members who can teach them and a vehicle to use for practicing. In such cases, structured instruction and professional guidance may not be necessary.

Ultimately, whether driving school is necessary depends on your individual circumstances and goals.  If you're unsure whether driving school is right for you, it may be helpful to consult with a driving instructor or licensing authority for guidance.
